Why Becoming A Barista is a Smart Move in Today’s Economy

To Become A Barista is a Smart Move in Today's Economy

In the last ten years, thriving coffee culture has spread well beyond the American coffee centers of Seattle, New York, and Los Angeles and is quickly moving in every city and county throughout the United States. It means that if you decide to become a barista, you will find a job in any of these cities and all over the world!

Globally, the need for great coffee is everywhere you find people. The chances are that you or someone you know has had a cup of coffee this morning. That's because the popularity of coffee, including specialty coffee, is transforming cities and the way people socialize in big cities and small towns. The greater the need for coffee, the more people need to pour it.

The question then becomes: who is going to serve all this coffee?

Well, for the most part, the answer is those skilled baristas are behind the coffee bars. These skilled coffee experts, with their knowledge and expertise, perfect each cup they serve. Baristas play a vital role in local coffee shops, and thus local economies – and will continue do so for many years to come.

Here are a few reasons why becoming a barista is a smart move in today's economy.

The Advantages of Becoming a Barista

Flexible schedule

Whether you want to serve coffee full-time or part-time, baristas often have flexible schedules that allow them to hold a couple of jobs or work and go to school simultaneously. In addition, the ability to work early morning shifts, weekend shifts, and afternoon shifts makes planning out their week, month, or semester easier for some. As your schedule changes, it is our hope that your coffee shop manager will be able to work with you and other baristas to ensure your schedule flexibility.

Potentially Good Pay

While all baristas don't make high hourly wages, many of them do. Many baristas get paid their state's minimum wage or near there. Where they get more money is through the tips of their patrons. Some baristas can make up to $40 an hour with tips in some busy locations, along with their minimum base pay. Of course, how much a barista gets paid varies on several factors, including the amount of traffic or business a café receives, whether or not tipping is encouraged, and whether baristas do their part to make the customer feel special unique.

Socializing

If you become a barista, you will spend much of your time talking to the customers. What's the latest community news? What's the weather going to be like today? These small and seemingly insignificant “chit-chat” can significantly impact and leave an impression on customers. People who like to talk to others and socialize daily with friends and strangers will have a great time being a barista.

Drinking Great Coffee

If you decide to become a barista, most likely it's because you like coffee. So what better way to experiment and try your choice of espresso drinks than by being a barista? It's no secret that baristas, on average, drink much more coffee than non-baristas. It's part passion, part curiosity, and part trying out your craft. Nevertheless, baristas can have a great time drinking various coffee drinks that they will probably love.

Transferable Skills

Great baristas are needed everywhere. For example, suppose you plan to move to a new city or a different state and search for a job. Being a barista has plenty of benefits because you can transfer your coffee skills to another café. That means you never have to worry about finding another job quickly when transitioning from one place to the other. Additionally, you may grow into other areas of the coffee industry. For example, you may consider being a coffee roaster, coffee shop manager, green coffee buyer, or hope to start a coffee shop of your own one day.

What Can You Do Today to Become a Barista

The digital transformation has changed the market and the economy in the recent few years. Today's “digital economy” has transformed the way we perform the most common activities. For example, it's not necessary anymore to sit in a boring class to study a subject. You only need a computer or a mobile device with an internet connection.

The way we teach and learn things has changed. Even barista training moved online. This means that you can buy an online barista class just in a few clicks or purchase a barista training book. It has never been so easy to become a barista than today. If you are thinking about becoming a barista and not ready to pay a large amount of money for a barista school, start small and see whether a barista job is right for you.
