How to Maintain Consistency in Your Coffee Shop?

In our barista school, we put a particular emphasis on consistency. No doubt, because consistency is the cornerstone of any coffee shop's success. As you probably know already, there are so many factors and variables affecting coffee that sometimes it seems that consistency can never be achieved.

Still, there are a few ways you can stay on top of your everyday challenges and achieve maximum consistency. Consistency allows you to reach a higher efficiency level and even increase your barista tips and overall coffee shop income. Whether you work at a busy drive-thru coffee stand or a cafe at your university, you'll want to keep your coffee beverages consistent.

Consistent Quality Products

Consistency starts with quality products and ingredients. This is a rule of thumb without any exception. Always choose a wholesale coffee roaster you can trust. Sampling their coffee many times, reading reviews, and talking to other coffee businesses will give you enough data to decide if a coffee roaster is reliable.

The coffee roasters or bakery vendors must have proper management and quality control systems to provide fresh, high-quality coffee and other products every time.

Additionally, they must be reliable, trustworthy, and dependable. Quality is something you can’t compromise on. If you notice that your products deviate from an initial quality, don’t hesitate to report to your coffee shop manager or owner.

Staff Management and Empowering

Baristas play a key role in creating consistent quality drinks. Using the best coffee beans, water, and milk doesn’t guarantee a great coffee drink all the time. The consistency of your coffee drinks can be achieved through continuous barista training.

The barista should be able to:

  • know and follow the recipes
  • dial-in espresso
  • steam milk properly
  • have efficient workflow
  • be knowledgeable about coffee
  • have a friendly and open-minded attitude

Although some of these qualities are innate, like friendliness or open-mindedness, other skills can be mastered only through adequate barista training. It’s highly recommended that baristas repeat their training regularly. Online barista training is also good for this purpose. No doubt, on-site barista training is also effective. This is the only way you can ensure that everyone in the coffee shop is on the same page.

Your emphasis as a barista should be on customer service. Patrons are looking for a unique but welcoming experience, and the baristas have provided it every time, no matter who is behind the counter today.

Personal development always means empowerment and higher self-confidence. This is why when baristas are provided with repeated training, new experiments, trips to coffee-growing countries. They feel truly appreciated. Together with your baristas, continue to cup and analyze different coffee origins and roasts. This will teach baristas to describe coffee and develop a coffee lingo. Sending baristas to coffee events, conventions, and competitions will make them feel valued and boost their passion for coffee and their barista duties.

Baristas are looking for a sense of purpose and motivation for new achievements. They can find it in coffee education that can be exciting and fun.

Creating a Positive Work Culture

A coffee business in your community is more than just a business. There’s something you want to tell your community. There are some values you want to tell the world about. Then again, maybe some ideas you want to promote, for example, fair trade, eco-friendliness, etc.

In any case, a healthy coffee shop culture focuses on stable values and goals that you, as a coffee shop owner, want to convey to your baristas. This includes continuous coffee education, superior quality, excellent customer service, and a passion for coffee. It’s important that everyone in your coffee shop – starting with YOU – enjoys what they are doing. Your excitement and passion are contagious. If you love your work and continuously empower your baristas, they will look up to you.

The personal satisfaction of a coffee shop owner and baristas will eventually impact the customer experience positively.

Another important factor is a positive atmosphere. Baristas and their attitude and personality often create your atmosphere. A barista is an ambassador of a coffee shop since, for many people, coffee education often starts from a conversation with a barista. Make sure your coffee shop adopts a culture of education. This is why a hiring system implemented in a coffee shop should be focused on personality, not experience. As a result, you can teach skills, but you can’t simply teach passion and having a good personality.
